A month ago, Austin Children’s Shelter’s Kari Hamilton posted the above photo of a bedroom in the ACS Emergency Shelter cottage to social media, asking for help with a makeover. Kari wanted to “add some life and warmth” to help make the children and youth who stay with us to feel safe and comforted.
The post spread like wildfire, and the community response that followed was incredible. Our staff, volunteers, and the wider community contributed funds, items, and time to transform the space. See below for photos of the makeover.
If you want to join the effort, check out our ACS Amazon wish list to see what items we need the most to round out the safe, supportive environment at the shelter.
Just days after her initial post, Kari’s office was flooded with donated items from ACS’s Amazon wish list. Volunteers signups also poured in. As Kari put it on Facebook, “It sure takes a village to care for these children and we are so thankful for you!”
Once the items and volunteers were rolling in, it was time to get to work!
Our kids are going to love this space. Thank you to everyone who supported this project with donations and/or volunteer time. We appreciate you so much.
