When You Donate to ACSWritten by Victoria Berryhill
Although I’m only 18 years old, I have been on quite a journey. About a year and a half ago, my journey led me to Austin Children’s Shelter (ACS).
When I arrived at ACS, I was six months pregnant and had just been removed from my home because my family wasn’t in a good place. I’ve always been close with my family, and it was really difficult to be away from them while pregnant. Looking back, I now know that ACS was the best place for me to be.
When you donate to ACS, you’ll help provide the care and support that so many kids like me need.
At ACS, I was able to complete my high school diploma, finish my driver’s education course, grow as a mother, and gain parenting skills—all while maintaining relationships with my family and the father of my son.
After spending the past year and half of my life at ACS, I can safely say that my experience here was amazing, and I’m never going to forget this place or the wonderful staff. I say “staff,” and it doesn’t even feel right, because the staff are more like family to me and my son. Without the relationships I formed at ACS, I honestly wouldn’t be where I am today.
When you donate to ACS, you’re helping provide a future for teenage mothers like me.
You see, before coming here, I didn’t see a future for myself. Now that I’m leaving ACS, I see that I can do anything in the world, and the sky is the limit! My promise to the ACS staff and supporters is that I’m headed for greatness—I plan to take full advantage of all that I’ve gained from the Teen Parent Program and achieve all that I can. And I have already begun to do just that.
At my graduation ceremony, I was asked by my classmates to deliver a speech, which was a day I thought I’d never see. Now, I’m so excited to continue with my life plans and to attend college in the fall!
When you donate to ACS, you help ensure that young people like me and my son have the opportunity to grow and succeed.
I’m really going to miss ACS very much, and it’s bittersweet to leave. Thanks to your support, I was able to complete my high school diploma, finish my driver’s education course, grow as a mother, and gain parenting skills—all while maintaining relationships with my family and the father of my son.
Your gift truly makes a difference for young people like me. By donating today, you’re helping so many vulnerable kids and families to find peace, happiness, and hope in their futures.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart,
P.S. Thanks to Nyle and Nancy Maxwell, all donations will be MATCHED, dollar-for-dollar, up to $50,000! Please give generously and help support Austin’s children in need.
