Eat.Drink.Empower. and the Importance of Community Events

Written by Workhorse Marketing

Community events are a fun way for people in Austin to support the survivors who come to SafePlace. They raise much-needed funds and bring awareness to domestic violence, sexual assault and the services SafePlace offers. Any time we are out in the community, there is an opportunity for survivors or friends of survivors to learn about what could be a life-changing resource.

On Saturday August 24, Max’s Wine Dive hosted Eat.Drink.Empower. Max’s Executive Chef Erica Beneke dreamed up the event as a way to give Austin’s up-and-coming female chefs, whose work happens behind the scenes, a chance to stand in the spotlight. Bridget Bishop, Kenzie Allen, Abby Yates, Alexis Chong, Erica Beneke and Hannah Love each presented the crowd with beautiful, innovative dishes (You can see photos and descriptions of the food here:

SafePlace staff members were on hand to speak about the agency during the cocktail hour, and our Executive Director Julia Spann, and lawyer Karrie Key made opening remarks before the first course was served. Talking about sexual assault and domestic violence might sound like an awful way to start a Saturday night dinner, but as Julia said during her speech, “We are not a sad place. We are a very happy place, and we are doing wonderful prevention work.” We could not continue to do that work without the community’s passion and commitment to our cause. And if someone is moved to volunteer, pass our information along to a friend in need, or seek help themselves, then the event lived up to its name.

We’d like to thank Erica for thinking of SafePlace as she put this evening together. The night’s focus on empowering women made it a wonderful opportunity to shine a light on issues that impact many women’s lives–although they are not exclusive to women–and on the resources available to survivors in the Austin area.
