Direct Service Volunteer Requirements

If you’re looking for a hands-on volunteer role that truly makes a difference, direct service volunteering might be the perfect fit. Our direct service volunteers create safety, healing, and meaningful support for survivors, children, and families in our community.

Because this work involves direct support to survivors, there are a few important steps to prepare you for success.

• Attend a Volunteer Information Session.
• Be 21 or older (some volunteer opportunities are open to adults 18+ — volunteer staff will help you find the right fit).

All direct service volunteers must complete the following:

• Submit a complete application with references.
• Complete a criminal background check.
• Participate in a one-on-one interview with Volunteer Services.
• Participate in a one-on-one interview with program staff (Legal Services, Peer Support, or Children & Youth).

• 40-hour Core Advocacy Training to build a strong foundation in trauma-informed care and SAFE’s approach.
• 8–16 hours of program-specific training, depending on the role.

• Minimum 8 hours per month.
• 6-month commitment after completing Core Advocacy Training.

Some direct service roles may include costs such as:

• Background check fees: $12–$43.
• TB testing or fingerprinting may be required for certain programs.

SAFE never wants cost to be a barrier to volunteering. Scholarships and reimbursements are available—please reach out if you need support.

Payment is not required to volunteer at SAFE.
