SAFE statement: Chauvin is guilty

Written by SAFE
A jury on Tuesday, April 20, found ex-Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin guilty in the murder of George Floyd. This is a single instance of justice in an ongoing fight for an America that works for all, regardless of the color of one’s skin. For this moment, though, a Minneapolis jury has recognized that wearing a badge doesn’t provide license for the murder of an unarmed Black man.
At SAFE we know that racism results in violence and that it has infected every system in America. Like violence and abuse, racism is an insidious virus that infects across generations and systems, including those systems that are supposed to protect and serve while holding perpetrators of violence accountable. We can’t hope to stop abuse for anyone as long as racism continues to pervade all aspects of our society.
