With extensive training and an experienced staff, SAFE has developed a program that offers superior supports for foster, kinship, and adoptive families. We use a trauma-informed, trust–based curriculum that helps create a healing and therapeutic environment for the children and youth we serve. The goal is to create and support placements that will last. SAFE helps your family thrive by utilizing:

  • Pre-placement and on-going training
  • 24-hour on-call support for families
  • Enhanced, reliable access to respite care
  • Access to on-site medical and therapeutic staff
  • Team support to help meet children’s individual needs

Why should I foster or adopt through SAFE?

At the Austin Children’s Shelter Campus, we have been responding to the individual needs of children who have experienced trauma and loss, whom we can provide a continuum of care from our trained and caring staff. Our commitment to providing the best possible care for children and youth extends to our foster, adoptive and kinship parents through a robust and responsive support system.

Who can be a foster or adoptive parent?

Most anyone over the age of 24 who can pass a criminal background check and provide a safe and supportive home can become a foster or adoptive parent.

Becoming a foster or adoptive parent

Becoming a foster or adoptive parent will be both rewarding and challenging. Prospective foster and adoptive parents must meet certain requirements that include an orientation, training and a home study. The process takes two to six months to complete.
